secret to getting fit

Why is starting a new habit so freakin’ hard? Like, seriously, why does it feel like trying to solve a Rubik’s cube in the dark with oven mitts on? In this blog, I want to GIVE you the secret to getting fit. Let’s break it down with a couple of analogies to get us all on the same page.

Picture a toddler learning to walk. That first step takes 100% of their little brainpower. But once they get it? BOOM. They’re tearing through Walmart aisles like a caffeinated squirrel on roller skates, no self-control in sight.

Or think about a teenager who just got their driver’s permit. They’re basically The Fast and the Furious in their own mind—full of confidence and ready to crush it. Then they hit the interstate for the first time, clutching the steering wheel and side-eyeing their parent like, “Why did you let me do this?!” A few years later? That same kid is casually road-tripping across state lines, singing their heart out to bad pop songs, zero fear of merging onto I-70.

Here’s the thing: you’ve done this before. Not driving or running through Walmart like a lunatic, but learning something new. Maybe it was figuring out that fancy espresso machine your spouse just had to buy on Black Friday. You know, the one with a control panel so complicated it could launch a spaceship. At first, it felt impossible—you pressed buttons, made brown water, and questioned your life choices. But now? You can whip up a perfect americano while half-asleep.

So why, when it comes to getting healthy, do we suddenly forget all these lessons? Instead of powering through the awkward, messy learning phase, we panic, throw in the towel, and say, “Welp, guess this just isn’t for me.”

What is the Secret Sauce to Getting Fit?

This morning, I heard something in a sermon that lit up my brain like a Christmas tree. The pastor was talking about habits, and he said something so simple, yet so powerful:

Plan to fail.

Let that sink in for a second. It sounds counterintuitive, right? But here’s the catch: he wasn’t saying, “Expect failure and give up.” He was saying, build failure into your plan.

He used the example of reading the Bible and praying every day but tied it to exercise: you’re not going to work out every day. Life happens. But here’s the formula to that special secret sauce to unlock the superhero inside of you: never miss two days in a row. Skip one day? Fine. Skip two? Nope. By giving yourself some leeway, you build consistency without perfection.

And that’s the secret sauce, my friend. Consistency is where the magic happens.

The Real Secret to Long-Term Health: Learn to Love the Suck

Let’s be real: exercising, eating broccoli, drinking water, taking supplements, and going to bed on time suck. They suck harder than a Temu vacuum (and if you’ve seen the ads, you know that’s saying something).

But here’s the plot twist: when you’re consistent, those things eventually stop sucking so much. In fact, you might even like them. (Wild, right?) That’s how you build habits that stick. That’s how you make progress that lasts longer than your January gym membership.

So, What’s the Plan?

  1. Give Yourself Grace: You’re human, not a robot. Plan to miss a day—but never miss two.

  2. Focus on Consistency: It’s better to be mostly consistent for months than to go all-in for a week and burn out.

  3. Trust the Process: It’s awkward and messy at first, but you’ll get there. Just like that espresso machine or the Walmart sprint.

So here’s the question: Are you going to be consistent this week? One step at a time, my friend. Soon enough, you’ll be running your own aisles of life like a pro.
